Salt Box The Salt Box is a Colonial New England farm house that grew in the form of a lean-to shed or room added to the rear of the house. This is a 2 or 2 1/2-story, square or rectangular house with a steep gable roof that extends down to the first floor in the rear. Its name comes from the resemblance to the salt box found in old country stores.
